On 17 September 2025, we proudly launched the FYIRWA Youth Empowerment Program (FYEP) at GS NYAGASIGA in GATSIBO District. This significant initiative, generously supported by FYIRWA TRADING Ltd, has been meticulously designed to equip secondary school students with not only the practical skills but also the comprehensive knowledge that they need to thrive in today’s fast-changing and competitive world.
Why We Started
At FYIRWA, we hold a firm belief that investing in the potential and development of young people is, in essence, an investment in the vibrant future of Rwanda. In a rapidly evolving global landscape, we recognize that far too often, we encounter students who complete their schooling without possessing the essential mindset, skills, or confidence necessary to take meaningful steps toward their ambitions and goals. With this pressing issue in mind, the FYIRWA Youth Empowerment Program(FYEP) aims to effectively close that critical gap by offering a series of engaging weekly sessions focused on pivotal themes such as leadership, financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and digital skills, which are indispensable in today’s world.
Week 1: SMART Goals & Personal Vision
Our very first session was centered around helping students confront a crucial and often daunting question: “What do I want my future to look like, and how can I effectively get there?” To facilitate their goal-setting process and ensure they embark on a pathway toward success, we introduced the widely recognized and effective SMART goal framework, which comprises five key components:
1) Specific – Goals must be clear and focused, leaving no room for ambiguity, ensuring students understand exactly what they are aiming for.
2) Measurable – Goals should be trackable, allowing students to monitor their progress over time and remain motivated as they see advancements towards their objectives.
3) Achievable – Goals need to be realistic and attainable; this consideration is crucial in ensuring a sense of accomplishment and encouraging further efforts.
4) Relevant – Goals must be intrinsically connected to broader life aspirations, aligning them with their bigger dreams and overall purposes in life.
5) Time-bound – Goals should have a clear timeframe or deadline, prompting a sense of urgency and commitment, which is essential in maintaining focus.
Example: Instead of simply stating, “I will save money,” a more comprehensive SMART goal would be “I will save 2,000 Rwf every week for a duration of 3 months to accumulate enough funds to purchase exam preparation books valued at 24,000 Rwf.”
Student Highlights during FYIRWA Youth Empowerment Program week1
During this inaugural session, students took the time to write down personal SMART goals that covered a remarkable range of aspirations, from saving for vital study materials and educational resources to launching small side businesses and even extending their support towards their families. Their palpable energy, enthusiasm, and determination served as a compelling reminder that Rwanda’s youth are not just ready but are indeed eager to lead and shape a transformative future.
What’s Next
In the weeks to come, the participating students will delve deeper into essential topics that are crucial for their personal and professional development, such as:
– Financial Literacy Basics
– Entrepreneurship & Innovation
– Teamwork & Leadership
– Digital Skills for the Future
Each week, the students will also be tasked with completing specific challenges, adding an engaging element of friendly competition. They will have the opportunity to compete for exciting prizes, and the final winners will receive special recognition and rewards from FYIRWA TRADING, enthusiastically celebrating their hard work, dedication, and commitment to their growth and development.
Call for Supporting FYIRWA Youth Empowerment Program
We wholeheartedly welcome partnerships, cooperative initiatives, and support from schools, organizations, and individuals who share our vision of youth empowerment. Together, we can scale the FYIRWA Youth Empowerment Program(FYEP) to reach more students across Rwanda, empowering them with the essential mindset and skills required to succeed in their future endeavors, ensuring that they are well-equipped for the challenges ahead.
